French Prairie Bridge Project City Seeks Public Comments on Two Selected Bridge Types in French Prairie Bridge Project

April 17, 2019 - The City of Wilsonville is seeking input on two proposed bridge designs for the proposed French Prairie Bridge. The proposed bridge over the Willamette River would provide a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians to cross the river and allow emergency responders to cross the river in case of incidents or congestion on the adjacent I-5 Boone Bridge.

In January of 2019, the Wilsonville City Council unanimously supported the recommendation of the French Prairie Bridge Task Force designating two bridge types for further study among the five considered by the project team. The selected bridge types are a suspension bridge and cable-stayed bridge.

These two bridge types are considered “signature bridges” as they are unique forms not commonly constructed. The City Council and Task Force consider them the best options for Wilsonville because of their low impact on waterways and their ability to serve as a memorable landmark.

Individuals can learn more about these two bridge types by visiting FrenchPrairieBridgeProject.org. Interested individuals can also share their thoughts with decision-makers by filling out this survey before May 5 at 5 p.m. The project Task Force will use these comments, along with studies of costs, design, and effects, to recommend a preferred bridge design to the Wilsonville City Council and the Clackamas County Board of County Commissioners for consideration this spring.

For two years, regional and community leaders have worked toward realizing a 20-year vision to better connect the region’s expansive trail system. Upon completion of this project, the Portland Metro Ice Age Tonquin Trail would connect with the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway to fill a critical gap in local and regional multi-modal transportation infrastructure.
