With the pending retirement of Police Chief Nick Watt, Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts has appointed Lt. James Rhodes as the City’s new Chief of Police. Wilsonville contracts with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office for law-enforcement services as an efficient method to provide the community with a full-spectrum of professional police services.
Chief Rhodes has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 1997, serving in a wide variety of roles, including:
- Deputy Sheriff
- Field Training Officer
- Search-and-Rescue Coordinator
- Special Investigations Unit as an undercover narcotics officer
- Detective for child abuse, homicide and robbery cases
- Patrol Sergeant
- Public Information Officer
He most recently served as a Watch Commander for the Sheriff’s Office, overseeing a police shift and supervising special units such as the canine unit.
Wilsonville Mayor Knapp welcomed Chief Rhodes at the June 17 City Council meeting. City Manager Bryan Cosgrove said, “The community of Wilsonville looks forward to meeting Chief Rhodes and getting to know him. He brings an outstanding record to the City of top-quality service during his 16 years with the Sheriff’s Office. We are fortunate to have a police chief with such a diverse background who is also genuinely a really good guy.”
Newly appointed Chief Rhodes said, “I am truly both honored and excited at the opportunity to be Chief of Police for Wilsonville. This is a very special community with a great amount of positive, forward momentum composed of many great people. I look forward to getting to know better the residents and business people of Wilsonville.”
Chief Rhodes started his career as a volunteer reserve officer for Oregon City, and then was hired-on full-time in 1995. Chief Rhodes is a graduate of Western Oregon University with a B.S. in law enforcement and criminal justice. He holds numerous certificates from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, including certificates as a supervisor and in leadership. Chief Rhodes also holds the status as an Eagle Scout and is married with one child.
