On Wednesday, May 18, the Wilsonville Budget Committee is holding a meeting and public hearing to review the Proposed Fiscal Year 2016-17 City of Wilsonville Budget. The Budget Committee meeting is held at Wilsonville City Hall, 29799 SW Town Center Loop East, Wilsonville.
The Budget Committee, composed of 10 citizens including the five-member City Council and five residents appointed by the Council, reviews the City’s proposed revenues and expenditures for the upcoming fiscal year of July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2017. Members of the public are welcome to attend Budget Committee meetings and provide comments during the public hearing, either verbally or in writing.
Mayor Tim Knapp explains, “The budget sets forth the estimated resources that are available to the City over the next year and shows how the City plans to use those resources to pay for projects and programs that benefit the community.”
In his role as “Budget Officer,” City Manager Bryan Cosgrove delivers at the meeting the City’s budget message, which is an overview of the City’s fiscal health. Finance Director Susan Cole addresses larger trends in the City’s budget and highlights issues and budget proposals in the various City departments. Department Directors are available to respond to questions on specific line-items.
The Budget Committee reviews and discusses the budget, seeks more information when needed, hears public testimony and is able to recommend changes to the budget by a majority vote. After approval by the committee, the budget goes for adoption to the City Council in June, which further considers public comment and is able to make additional changes prior to adoption.
An additional Budget Committee meeting is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, June 1, at 6:00 p.m. for further discussion and review of the proposed budget. Another Budget Committee meeting is also tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, June 8, at the same time and location, if needed.
The City Council is scheduled to adopt the annual budget at the June 20 City Council meeting, and a public hearing on the budget is planned to be held.
